Last night I was lovingly(?)
fry up some won-ton wrappers.
As they were cooling I was
liberally dredge them in icing sugar,
along with a nice cuppa tea,
carry them up to The Anchorman.
We were working late, as always and
I thought a little treat would be nice!
But I wasn’t bringing the authentic article.
I was preparing a
I had no intention of actually ever creating these
childhood festive favorites for my dear husband.
Just a facsimile.
He loves these crispy little devils so much and really they are amazing!
There are many varieties of this kind of
twist of deep-fried crispy
From many cultures.
My husband is of Mennonite heritage
so this is the way
he was served them.
With a little glass pitcher of Rogers Golden Syrup alongside.
Thick and sweet.
This is a CLASSIC
favorite from his childhood.
Had his parents been from Denmark
the cookies would be a tad different
but the fundamentals would be the same.
a happy boy at the holidays
My father is Polish and his boyhood Christmas cookies were more like this.
The point of today’s story is not midnight snacking.
It is about the point in the season
Deep frying won-ton wrappers is a sloppy second to the
melt in your mouth,
This is the season of giving!
Not of Gift cards.
I am an artist…I guess I was looking for a short cut.
For somethings…and in some cases,
If you can’t make it right
don’t make it at all.
Shortbread is made with
This is the time to be pulling out all the stops.
Not pulling in horns.
No artificial flavored chocolate chips
Unless they make you happy
or you have an allergy…
that sort of thing.
I am somewhat rusty in the kitchen.
I spend 16 hours a day on the third floor of a 105 year old house
The kitchen is on the main.
I was a Stay At Home Mom for over 13 years.
I was there with our
4 cats and never regret a minute.
Lots on the fly all the time.
Lots of food.
I have made many batches of Christmas cookies over those years.
I have also done my share of deep fat frying.
Made homemade donuts.
French fried potatoes
sweet potato fries
Tempura…lots of hot oil delights.
Plus annually we celebrate Boxing Day with a Beef and a Cheese Fondue
it has just been awhile as I say.
In retrospect I wished I had just opted to make them up from scratch.
No short cuts.
Or perhaps gone the savory
instead of sweet route.
Taken up some bagel chips and roasted Red Pepper hummus instead.
I bet if I had…
I wouldn’t have I carelessly splashed a huge wave of scorching hot oil onto my RIGHT hand!
The hand I paint with.
did that ever frickin hurt.
Please watch hot oil around kids.
Thank goodness it hit my ring and pinky finger
Mr Pointer and Mr thumb can still hold a sharpie/paint brush
Whew…that was close.
I take from this mishap a lesson.
It is time to heal.
When I was in hospital I had Bridal shoes I was designing brought to my bedside.
“I have to keep working…Damn it!”
With a burn it is different
I will not be able to splash paint/oil around.
I will have to keep my hands dry.
I am actually, as I write this realizing that I am somewhat limited at the moment.
It is time.
Time to be still.
Time to tend to myself so that what I in turn offer out to others is genuine and pure.
Not some copy or fake.
Our loved ones are so worth it
And actually…it may be safer in the long run!
